What are injectables?

Injectables are substances the team at Advanced Specialty Associates injects beneath the skin to smooth wrinkles, restore lost volume, and enhance facial contours. These formulations are customizable to the unique needs of each patient. 

There are many different types of injectables. The team can recommend the options for your current skin concerns and cosmetic goals. Treatments are quick to perform, and results take only minutes to days to appear. Some injectables can last from many months to years.

How do injectables work?

Injectables work in two different ways. They can add volume to your skin or relax the facial muscles that control movement to diminish creasing. Some formulas for the injections contain lidocaine to ensure comfort throughout the procedure.

Are there different types of injectables?

The two most common types of injectables are:

Neuromodulators 

Neuromodulators target the nerves that control muscle movement. Botox® is the most well-known neuromodulator on the market. When injected into a specific muscle, Botox prevents it from contracting. The skin on top of the muscle gradually softens, minimizing the appearance of wrinkles.

The team recommends neuromodulators for dynamic wrinkles or expression lines. These wrinkles form from repeated muscle movement and tend to develop in the upper one-third of the face. 

Areas typically treated include:

crow's feet, forehead, and the glabella area/ glabellar complex  (those 11's between the eyebrows).

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that take only a few minutes to inject. The depth of the injection depends on the specific treatment area. Fillers restore volume to areas that have lost fat and tissue, like the cheeks and other hollows. 

Fillers target static wrinkles, which result from volume loss. While dynamic wrinkles tend to fade when you aren’t making facial expressions, static lines are visible when your face is at rest.

Many patients can enjoy both types of injectables for complete facial rejuvenation that targets all wrinkles. 

What can I expect from my injectables results?

All injectable results last for several months. Botox and other neuromodulators typically fade within 3-6 months, while fillers can last for 6-12 months or longer. Combining these treatments and returning to the practice for maintenance sessions can help extend your results.
